Since, COVID-19 forced families in education out from the school building, it has reminded us of how vulnerable families in education can be.
The day, COVID-19 forced families in education out from the school building, each family was left unconnected to the other families in their school because there is nothing in place to keep families in education connected to one another and there never was.
COVID-19 has shown us that families in education are easily separated.
At any time, families could be left vulnerable, isolated and alone in their bid to educate their families.
Families in education are at the mercy of the education system, relying on the goodness and goodwill of teachers, staff, principals and the other parents to keep them connected.
There is no port in a storm for families in education and there is no guarantee of support from other families in education who are sailing on the same seas because families in education are not connected as a collective group of people.
There are no guaranteed ways for families in education to stay connected and be able to communicate with one another in these times of COVID-19, or at any other time.
I understand that there would be parents who would say they are more than happy with the parents they have on their contact list and that they can turn to these parents for advice, help and guidance in good times and in bad.
But,
what about the families in education who do not have this luxury, who do not have other parents to contact even about small matters of educating their families?
What does the word together mean when referring to education?
Does it mean, students together? educators together? parents together?
but wait, parents are not together, parents are not connected as a collective group.
It took COVID-19 to bring to our attention what it must feel like for families in education who are suffering and dealing with issues in schools while doing this all by themselves, with no help available.
COVID-19 offers us a reminder to plan for a better future, a better future that offers parents a healthy, ongoing and available connection to other parents of families in education.
Parents could connect and communicate by using WhatsApp groups for every class and a Parent Support groups in every school?
Surely, this would help?
Help all families in education by connecting all families in education as a collective group making their journey easier for everyone concerned.
It would also help to boost morale and equality because when there would be a place where every parent belongs, then every child would stand a better chance of also belonging.
Individual commitment to a group effort- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.
